Released on September 13, Uglies is a science fiction film that quickly reached the top spot among the most watched films by Brazilian audiences. It tells the story of a dystopian world in which all people who do not fit society's beauty standards need to undergo plastic surgery.

Based on the books created by author Scott Westerfeld, the story shows that mandatory procedures go far beyond the cosmetic part. However, a group of rebels fight against what is happeningand her influence will change the life of Tally (Joey King) forever, who dreamed of changing her life after her operation.

What happens in the plot of Uglies?

The plot of Uglies begins when Peris (Chase Stokes), the protagonist's best friend, leaves the city where they live to have cosmetic surgery. With that, Tally starts to get closer to Shay (Brianne Tju), who is not sure if she wants to go through the same procedure.

She takes the protagonist to a place known as Smoke, where people who have never undergone the transformation live in relative peace. However, not even this is enough to convince the protagonist of Uglies to give up on her dream, which she decides to pursue when she turns 16.

On the day of the procedure, she is summoned by Dr. Cable (Laverne Cox), the head of the Special Circumstances division. He tells her that she has two choices: reveal the whereabouts of Shay and her new friends, or never undergo the surgery and live forever as an “ugly person.”

To convince the protagonist, he argues that the inhabitants of Smoke are creating a powerful weapon that will destroy society. Although aware of Tally's mission, Shay opens the doors of the place to her new friend who, little by little, discovers a new value in human relationships and gives up on changing her appearance.

Movie brings a big surprise

During her time in Smoke, the protagonist becomes close to David (Keith Powers) and meets his parents, Az (DeVon Johnson) and Maddy (Charmin Lee), who worked as surgeons in the past. They reveal that cosmetic procedures, in addition to changing people's appearance, have made them susceptible to government control.

This happens through lesions in the frontal cortex of patients, which cause them to no longer care about anything and begin to feel a false sense of happiness. According to scientists, Cable believes that some people are created to lead and others to obey.and this is the only way society will function properly.

Uglies director McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) explains that while the film's villain offers a seemingly beautiful life, free from prejudice and disease, the price to pay for it is too high. He is searching for those who fled to Smoke precisely because its residents are seeking a way to cure the injuries that turn people into puppets.

What happens at the end of Uglies?

Although Tally does not betray her new allies, the necklace she received from Dr. Cable gives away her position and allows an elite army to invade Smoke. In this, we learn that Peris and David were forced to undergo the cosmetic procedure, and they are used in a battle in which Az is eventually killed.

However, Maddy manages to steal the missing element that reverses the effects of the surgery on patients' brains. Tally decides to serve as a guinea pig for the experiment, stating that she will never forget her colleagues and will leave “a sign” for them that she is still the same after the operation.

In the final scenes of Uglies, we see the character leaving the procedure apparently happy with the results, but with a visible scar that makes clear her commitment to her allies. This sets the film up for a future sequel. which should follow the events of Westerfeld's books, which treat the story as a trilogy. However, so far Netflix has not confirmed whether it will produce the complete saga.

Google Search will be able to identify images created by AI

Google Search will be able to identify images created by AI

With the proliferation of increasingly more content with generative artificial intelligence, Google has announced that it will implement a way for users to know when an image was created or edited by AI. The feature will initially be available for Google Search, but the idea is that the company's other verticals will also have this capability.

To do this, Google uses the C2PA (Coalition for Content Pronouncement and Authenticity) certification, which acts as a technical standard for provenance. C2PA can understand the roots of the image and tell you where it was taken, whether it was taken with a smartphone or camera, manually edited via software, and whether it was entirely or partially created by AI.

Thus, images containing C2PA metadata will be tracked by users when clicking on the “About this image” option when selecting content through Google Search, Lens and Circle to Search. Currently, it is already possible to check some details about images with this option, but only scarce information, such as the publication period of the content.

The About this image is still too simple to provide complex data. Screenshot: Felipe Vidal/TecMundo

YouTube should get a feature in the future

In its announcement, Google says it plans to expand the C2PA standard to advertising and integrate with YouTube in the future. For the video social network, it expects users to be able to identify when content was captured by a camera.

Even with good measures, the certification used by the giant is still not widely compatible and needs more acceptance in the market. Companies like Leica and Sony already use the standard in their products, and it is only a matter of time before other brands follow suit.

With the growing number of deepfakes involving the world of famous figures, pornography and the creation of AIs without moral filters, such as Grok, it will become increasingly complex to distinguish reality from fiction.

Types of VPN: understand the 7 main security protocols

Types of VPN: understand the 7 main security protocols

Every day, people are looking for a VPN to create a secure browsing environment, or simply access content in other regions. However, What is the best option for you based on the security protocol?

If you are looking for this answer, we will discuss below what they are: the 7 main security protocols when we talk about VPN. Follow along!

1. OpenVPN

OpenVPN is one of the most popular and widely used protocols in VPN services, known for its balanced combination of security and speed.

Using military-grade encryption, OpenVPN is great for protecting sensitive information. Because of this, it is widely adopted by VPN users all over the world.

One of the great advantages of OpenVPN is its flexibility. It can work on different ports and uses protocols such as TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) or UDP (User Datagram Protocol), allowing for adjustments that improve both the security and performance of the connection.

Furthermore, it is an open source technology, which means it is constantly updated by a community of developers.

2. L2TP/IPSec

L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol), combined with IPSec (Internet Protocol Security), is another widely used VPN protocol. This protocol offers good security and is natively supported by many operating systems, such as Windows and macOS.

L2TP, by itself, does not offer encryption. But when paired with IPSec, it becomes a fairly secure solution. However, eit may be a little slower than OpenVPNsince the data goes through two stages of encapsulation, which impacts performance.

3. PPTP

PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) is one of the oldest VPN protocols and its main feature is its ease of configuration. It was developed by Microsoft and, for many years, was widely used in corporate networks.

However, not everything was so perfect, as PPTP's simplicity comes at a price: it is not the most secure protocol.

While it's still a good choice for those who need fast, easy-to-setup connections, its vulnerability to security attacks makes it not recommended for those who want to protect sensitive data.

4. IKEv2/IPSec

IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange version 2), commonly used with IPSec, is a fast and secure VPN protocol. It is especially effective on mobile devices because it offers excellent reconnection capability.

In this sense, if you lose your internet connection, IKEv2/IPSec can quickly reestablish it without compromising security.

Additionally, IKEv2/IPSec offers a good combination of strong encryption and browsing speed, making it very efficient for users who are on the move, such as those who frequently use mobile networks.

5. WireGuard

WireGuard is a relatively new protocol, but it is rapidly gaining popularity. Designed to be simpler and more efficient than traditional protocols, WireGuard focuses on speed and simplicity of use, without sacrificing security.

There are VPNs that are better on mobile, while others have more features on desktop. (Source: GettyImages/Reproduction)There are VPNs that are better on mobile, while others have more features on desktop. (Source: GettyImages/Reproduction)Source: GettyImages/Reproduction

One of the reasons WireGuard is so fast is its lean code, with fewer lines than other protocols like OpenVPN. This also makes it easier to identify potential vulnerabilities, making it a promising choice for the future of VPNs.

6. SSTP

SSTP (Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol) is a protocol developed by Microsoft, which provides great compatibility with the Windows system. It uses the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol to create a secure connectionwhich means it can bypass firewalls that block other forms of VPN.

Although it is a very secure option, SSTP has a disadvantage: because it is owned by Microsoft, it is not open source, which can generate distrust among users who prefer community-audited solutions.

7. SoftEther

SoftEther is one of the most versatile VPN protocols, being compatible with several other technologies, such as OpenVPN, SSTP, and L2TP/IPSec. Developed in Japan, it is known for being one of the fastest and most secure protocols available.

SoftEther offers an excellent alternative for those who want a high-performance VPN without sacrificing security. Its flexibility and ability to work across multiple platforms make it an interesting choice for users with varying connection needs.

Now that you know the main security protocols, you can make an informed choice of VPN. So, share this content with your friends and take the opportunity to read about the common terms for those who use VPNs. See you next time!

Gmail now has integration with Gemini's AI assistant

Gmail now has integration with Gemini's AI assistant

Gmail has been adding AI features to help users for a while now, but now it appears that Gemini has been incorporated into the messenger as well. Android Authority managed to activate the feature while Gmail was open, revealing that Gemini now has a sort of near-native integration with the app.

To perform the procedure, users must keep an email open and press the command that activates Gemini on the smartphone. Automatically, the artificial intelligence opens a list of options such as summarizing the content, suggested responses, a list of actions and there is also an area where the user can write or say what they want to be done.

This option appears to be integrated with a new Gemini feature that can “read” the smartphone’s screen and take certain actions. In addition to the Gmail capabilities, this integration allows the assistant to be activated while the user is watching a video on YouTube and the AI can search for answers about the content.

Gemini is getting smarter and smarter

While interesting, Gemini's options are very similar to what the Gmail app already offers natively. However, it's good to know that Google has been improving the assistant's capabilities to be even more useful for users.

In the company's latest presentation, Google revealed that Gemini will gain new types of voices to speak to users, and will give the AI a more explanatory tone. The idea is that this technology will become increasingly responsive over time.

To access AI features in Gmail, users must be a Google Workspace Labs participant or a Google One AI Premium subscriber.

Scheduled to premiere today (18), Agatha Since Always is a Disney+ series that will explore more of the magical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As with other productions on the platform, the story was made to work well on its own, but will bring several references to plots and characters from the past.

Fortunately, the story's more focused theme makes it you don't need to watch more than 10 years of movies and series to understand its concepts and characters. To make your “homework” easier, we’ve gathered together which series and films you need to keep in mind to make the most of the new streaming attraction.

What do you need to watch before Agatha Ever After?

To really enjoy the plot of Agatha Since Always, the only previous production that is mandatory is the series WandaVision. Also available on Disney+, the series stands out for revealing the first appearance of Agatha Harkness in the MCU and for establishing her relationship with Wanda Maximoff and Vision.

Without going into any major spoilers, the sorceress played by Kathryn Hahn was responsible for manipulating the duo and making them believe that they had found happiness in a fictional world. For her crimes, she ended up being imprisoned in the town of Westview, from which she will be freed by a mysterious gothic teenager.

In addition to the streaming series, It is also important to have watched Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to understand the current state of the world of magic in the MCU. The 2022 feature film shows what happened to Wanda after the events of WandaVision and reveals the true scope of the character's powers.

Those who want to delve even deeper into the former Avenger's past can also check out the films listed below. However, they are not essential to understanding Agatha Ever After, which will present its own slice of the Marvel universe and several new characters. Check out the summary selection:

  • WandaVision
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron;
  • Avengers: Infinity War;
  • Avengers: Endgame.

What to expect from the series?

Agatha Ever After is set to pick up right after the events of WandaVision, when its main character was defeated. Trapped in Westview, the character will find herself without access to most of her powers, which will force her to gather a coven of witches to accompany her on the Witch Road.

This magical place promises to offer many challenges and dangers to those who decide to go through it, a mission that can end the life of those who are not strong enough. However, Those who are victorious will be able to find “what they lack” — which, in the protagonist's case, appear to be her powers from the past.

Agatha Forever will give prominence to one of Marvel's oldest characters, created in 1969 by Stan Lee Jack Kirby. Initially linked to the Fantastic Four and displaying the features of an elderly woman, the sorceress gained a new look over the decades, as well as a more complex personality in recent years.

Uber launches stricter identity verification for passengers

Uber launches stricter identity verification for passengers

Uber has announced new measures to verify the identity of its passengers — but this time, to protect drivers. The authentication methods were presented this Tuesday (17) at a company event in the United States.

Just like drivers, passengers will have to go through a more rigorous verification process: the application will compare data such as name and phone number against third-party databases to check for possible inconsistencies.

A platform also added a new verification badge for passengers. To receive it, the user must present an official document in the application and confirm their identity.

Uber will now verify passengers' identities in exchange for a special badge.

When the account is verified, the ride request will appear with the special seal, providing more security to the driver. It is worth remembering, however, that identity verification is not mandatory for the passengerwhile the cross-referencing of information with a database, yes.

In testing since the beginning of the year

The new passenger authentication system has been in testing since the beginning of the year, but in a limited number of cities. According to the company, results were satisfactory “with most customers” of these markets.

With this new feature, Uber hopes to ensure a safer experience for drivers — its main user base.

In Brazil, passengers must provide a valid CPF number and date of birth to re-register. However, the system does not verify whether the document actually belongs to the person.

According to Uber's official page, the new verification system (data cross-referencing and identity authentication) will be released first in the United StatesThere is no forecast for the launch of the new product in more regions.
