Last Tuesday (17) Amazon released the first trailer for the new series of The Office. But no, it is not a revival of the North American version, with Michael Scott (Steve Carell), Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson).
This is the Australian adaptation, which will have a woman playing the most clueless boss ever seen for the first time. With an entirely new cast, the production promises to maintain the same approach as previous adaptations: the embarrassment of others and the classic awkward moments.
On the internet, however, the reception of the new trailer has not been the best, with several people accusing the series of being cringe for the wrong reasons. “It surprised me, I thought it would be bad, but it's worse than I imagined!”, said one user in the comments of the trailer on YouTube. “What can I say about this new series that I have only known for so little time and already really dislike?”, responded another.
The backlash was to be expected, considering the US version of The Office is a favorite among comedy fans.
The Office in the United States is the most famous version of the series (although it is not the original)
What many people don't know, however, is that the version with Michael Scott is just one of 13 already made of the series. And, although no one has asked for another adaptation in 2024, no one had asked for one in 2005 either, when the North American adaptation was released.
Hope is the last to die
By now, it's no secret that Hollywood often makes its own version of successful foreign series and films around the world. That's more or less what happened with the series starring Steve Carell, released just four years after the British version aired.
The great triumph of the American version, however, is that the series has taken on a life of its own over the years, and has not merely copied the original.
The first season, for example, relied heavily on British humor – which didn’t seem like something organic for a US production. Luckily, the writers decided to leave this approach aside and invest in their own personality in the seasons that followed.
The result is quite clear: The Office in the United States was a success and remains very much alive in the hearts of the public to this day.

The hope now is that the Australians can bring the classic humor of The Office, but with their own authentic identity. If the opposite happens, it will be difficult for the public to succeed.
As a fan of the series, I hope the Australian version is as good as Michael Scott's – and I'll admit that I'm curious to see a female version of the most beloved boss in the world of television. Now, we'll just have to watch it to find out.
The Office (Australia) premieres October 10 on Prime Video.
