Exploring Global Warming: A Complete Guide to Greenhouse Gases

Responsible for trapping heat in the atmosphere and causing record rates of global warming across the planet, Greenhouse gases are often portrayed as the big villains of the story. However, they are a natural and essential part of the Earth's climate system.

Without the natural greenhouse effect, the ideal temperature to keep the Earth habitable (around 15 °C) would fall to -18 °C. However, by artificially increasing the concentrations of some of these gases in the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide, human activities have enhanced the natural greenhouse effect, causing unprecedented global warming.

Meta renews partnership with eyewear brand for new smart models

Meta renews partnership with eyewear brand for new smart models

Meta, owner of services such as Instagram and WhatsApp, announced the expansion of its partnership with the brand EssilorLuxottica. The company specialized in glasses and other optical equipment will now be an ally for at least another ten years in projects in the sector.

EssilorLuxottica has already worked with Meta on the two models of smart glasses launched by the company with Ray-Ban. With the new contract, the expectation is that Mark Zuckerberg's company will continue in this market and launch other generations of the device in the coming years.

According to the official statement, the alliance will allow Ray-Ban Meta eyewear to maintain the “perfect balance between form and functionality”, with EssilorLuxottica's expertise in the optical field and its distribution network combined with Meta's technological advances — including in artificial intelligence (AI).

Smart glasses market booming?

The most recent model from the partnership was the 2023 Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The product caught the market's attention even though it was sold in few regions and could boost other similar launches from competitors.

There are rumors, for example, that Apple is planning a competitor in the sector — it would be very different from the Apple Vision Pro, sold since March of this year by the manufacturer.

In addition, Qualcomm already has a platform ready for the smart glasses format and its launch will involve an alliance with Google and South Korea's Samsung. In China, brands such as Oppo have also already launched restricted sales models or are already testing the technology.

Smart glasses are capable of recording or taking photos using attached cameras, as well as displaying content on the lenses. Among their functions, the models can send notifications from other devices and make audio or video calls, for example, with navigation normally based on gestures, voice or taps on the temple.

Recently released on Amazon Prime Video, Earthquake Magnitude 9.5 (Flashover) is a Chinese production that has been attracting attention. A few days after its premiere on streaming, it already occupies the fourth position among the most watched films among subscribers located in Brazil.

Directed by Oxide Chun Pang, the feature film tells the story of a gigantic disaster in which firefighters are the only hope for any kind of victory or redemption. In it, an earthquake in the industrial center of Guangchen is the starting point for a series of explosions that turn the place into a veritable hell.

Led by Captain Zhao, a team of firefighters decides to search for survivors and prevent new explosions from happening with the spread of the fire. Among the risks they run is that the flames reach sensitive parts of Guangchen, which could cause a new explosion similar to the force of an atomic bomb.

Is a Magnitude 9.5 Earthquake Worth It?

Like a typical disaster film, Magnitude 9.5 Earthquake takes inspiration and elements from the real world and exaggerates them to favor the action and the use of surprising special effects. According to the website Hype, the film goes further and shows the entire preparation process and difficulties that firefighters face in everyday situations.

The outlet also praised the Chinese film for truly exploring the camaraderie of its protagonists, as well as showing them as people who take their jobs seriously and are not afraid to face difficulties. “The bravery and strength of being able to put anyone above them is really respectable,” it said.

Furthermore, Magnitude 9.5 earthquake praised for its pace and for its ability to generate constant tension among the audience. “What will happen next? How will they save this citizen this time? Will they escape safely? Well, these questions will answer themselves once you watch the film.”

Free Malaysia Today had a different impression, saying that the film is flawed by focusing more on melodrama than on its disaster elements. “This is not the film to watch if you are interested in well-written characters: although it follows the firefighting team for most of its two hours, the audience is given little information about who each member is.”

Magnitude 9.5 Earthquake also divided opinions among the few reviews published on Rotten Tomatoes, which considered it only an average film. The same impression can be seen on IMBd, a website where it has a score of 5.3/10 among the 226 user reviews shared so far.

Free Malaysia Today explains that while it may bring entertainment, Earthquake 9.5 It mainly fails to stray too far from the formula of other disaster films.. According to the website, this is evident in the fact that, despite showing many explosions and destruction, there is not enough mention of the cost of living associated with these situations.

“Ultimately, it doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the genre. In fact, it’s overloaded with so many melodramatic moments that you might end up thinking you’ve tuned in to a soap opera instead of a disaster movie,” the site concludes. However, the criticism hasn’t stopped the film from winning over audiences looking for entertainment in the Amazon Prime Video catalog.

The Brave Squire is a metalinguistic journey with the lightness of children's stories – Review

The Brave Squire is a metalinguistic journey with the lightness of children's stories – Review

The Plucky Squireknown as The Brave Squire in the official localization, it is a game that has captivated the public since its reveal trailer in 2022. Produced by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital, known for its accurate curation of independent productions, the title jumped out at you with its hand-drawn graphics and perspective transitions from gameplayplaying with its visuals, sometimes 2D, sometimes 3D.

This is one of those games that likes to subvert expectations, and in which the metalanguage is the tone of the experience. Its simple narrative, set in a children's storybook, serves as a backdrop for many fun ideas that are only possible in a medium like video games, reserving many surprises throughout its ten-hour campaign.

O Voxel had the opportunity to try the full version in advance and tells, in the following lines, the positive and negative points ofThe Brave Squireor The Plucky Squire. It is worth remembering that the game arrives on September 17th with versions for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Check it out:

Simple plot, but it works

First of all, we must praise the excellent localization into Brazilian Portuguese. The game's texts are satisfactorily well written and the narration by Mauro Ramos, known for voicing characters such as Shrek and Pumba, isThe Lion King, gives a light and charismatic tone to Pontinho's adventure. Among the good decisions are also the names of the protagonist's friends — Violeta, Batera and Barbaluar — and some of the places visited, such as Ártia, Caracópolis de Janeiro and Praia do Remelexo.

The game is set in a children's storybook, so the plot doesn't have many secrets: Dot is known for protecting the vibrant Kingdom of Mana from the villainy of the sorcerer Enfezaldo, who, one day, ends up discovering that he lives in a literary world and that he is bound by the constraints of the script, always doomed to lose. In possession of a copy of the book, the antagonist uses the so-called Metamagic to expel Pontinho and rewrite his story.

Throughout the campaign, it is very difficult not to make comparisons with works such as Toy Story. After the incident, the brave squire finds himself in the room of his owner, a boy named Sam who really likes Dot's adventures. However, if Dotty manages to rewrite the story, the book would no longer come off the shelf because of its poor writing and the child would no longer be inspired by literature, to the point of giving up on her brilliant future as a writer and illustrator.

The premise of the game is quite cute and innocent, although Enfezaldo's evil deeds worsen and even end up contrasting with the childish theme. The plot is not extraordinary or unmissable, but it works well enough to establish its rules, which are subverted on purpose, and guide the player with its varied gameplay mechanics — which are undoubtedly one of the greatest highlights of The Brave Squire.

Surprises in the right measure

Most of the time, The Brave Squire works as a 2D top-down action adventure game, very reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda. It is possible to strike with a sword, jump and dodge. As he progresses, Dot can acquire new abilities, including the ability to throw his sword, execute a strike while jumping or even a spinning sword strike.

Overall, the controls are quite responsive. There are just a few annoying details, such as the inability to walk while preparing a spinning sword swing. The simplicity of the combat also serves a purpose: the fluid transition to the three-dimensional world. Whether in 2D or 3D, the basic actions remain and make the gameplay quite intuitive.

The great charm, however, is in the mini-games creative and completely change the way you play. When the moment demands it, Pontinho can transform and take on mechanics that refer to classics like Punch Outfrom Nintendo, and even Fantasy Zonefrom Sega. Fans of rhythm games, turn-based RPGs or puzzles like Bubble Shootersare also well represented throughout the campaign.

One of the game's greatest merits is knowing the right time to stop with a mini-game. They all have the ideal length, so they don't get boring or repetitive. The variety also helps to keep the player curious about what comes next, and I guarantee: The Brave Squire always manages to put a smile on your face with his constant breaking of expectations.

Need to give more control to the player

However, It is worth noting that the game mechanics are quite methodical. Let me explain: the promotional trailers may have given the impression that the player is free to enter and exit the book whenever they want, as well as manipulate it, but that's not how it works. This element is only available in specific portals. Some features, such as tilting the book to move heavy objects inside, also only work when the game wants them to.

In other words, the environments do not give much room for experimentation. The mechanics do not allow us to find other ways to solve the same problem. It is as if the game makes every effort to make us follow what is assumed, like a controlled environment. This makes the experience much more linear than desired. Of course, it is easy to imagine that these mechanics of manipulating the book and moving between realities could break the game, but I wish there was more room for player creativity.

It also bothers me that the gameplay rhythm is constantly interrupted with unsolicited hintsespecially from Barbaluar. Note: the game already offers the option of receiving tips from an NPC who appears in the scene during each puzzle, called Barbinha. Therefore, there was no need for the game to suggest what should be done before even returning control to the player. This greatly underestimates intelligence.

There are several mini-games throughout The Valiant Squire that reference classic video games.There are several mini-games throughout The Valiant Squire that reference classic video games.Source: Reproduction/Bruno Magalhães

I also encountered some minor issues. There were times when characters from the book would disappear completely. This happened in one of the final moments of the story and also in the chapter selection, to revisit moments from the campaign. In addition, I encountered a soft lock caused by a questionable decision by level designinvolving an item called Carimbomba.

Finally, it's worth highlighting the visuals. It's already stating the obvious at this point, but the game really enchants with its artistic style and striking colors. The contrast between the 2D visuals of the book and the three-dimensional scenery around it also gives it a fun aesthetic, in addition to contributing to its metalinguistic proposal.

It's very interesting how the game presents some “real world” scenarios that allow Pontinho to navigate, for example, through drawings thrown on the table or even illustrations of physical objects, such as mugs.

Most of the time, the outside world is uninteresting and has nothing exciting to explore, but there are moments in the narrative where the scenery completely transforms, as if Sam is exercising his imagination and creating stories with his toys. I wish the outside world had a level design more daring and that encourages exploration, but it serves its purpose and works as far as possible.

It is worth it?

O Brave Squire It's a light-hearted experience that always manages to put a smile on the player's face with its surprises. Although it's more linear than desired, the game constantly plays with our expectations and reinvents its mechanics in an ingenious and fun way.

The narrative's metalinguistic tone is spot on, adding more value to its simple and even innocent plot. The supporting characters, such as Violeta and Batera, are also charismatic and fortunately are well used throughout the story. The excellent localization into Brazilian Portuguese also adds much more charm to its world and characters.

Its transition mechanics between the 2D and 3D world, as well as the ability to manipulate words from the book to transform scenarios, have enormous potential, but end up being very restrictive because they don't allow room for experimentation. Despite this, The Brave Squire It's the kind of game that's worth giving a chance just for its disruptive and creative proposal.

Nota do Voxel: 85

Positive points (pros):

  • Mechanics that play with expectations and perspectives;
  • Cute and charismatic characters;
  • Quality of writing and localization in Brazilian Portuguese;
  • Intuitive gameplay with several accessibility options;
  • Collectibles that reveal more of the development process.

Negative points (cons):

  • The game is very restrictive with its book manipulation mechanics;
  • There are many moments where gameplay is interrupted by unsolicited hints;
  • Bugs where characters in the book disappeared when replaying chapters;
  • Some decisions of level design leave something to be desired and are subject to soft lock.

The Valiant Squire review was made possible thanks to a Steam copy provided by Devolver Digital's press office. The game will be released on September 17th with versions for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, it will be available at launch for PS Plus Extra and Deluxe subscribers.

Every now and then, car manufacturers like to show off what they can do when they don't have to worry so much about costs or sales volume, among other factors. The all-new Ford Mustang GTD is a perfect example of this creative exercise.

First unveiled in August 2023, the Mustang GTD is essentially a street-legal GT3. It starts out as a regular Mustang at the Flat Rock plant in the US, then is driven to Canada where teams at Ford Performance and supplier Multimatic transform it into the monstrous GTD.

ChatGPT creator creates independent security committee to oversee actions

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI, responsible for services such as ChatGPT, announced the creation of an independent security committee. The body will be responsible for evaluating and monitoring the company's own activities.

O Safety and Security Committee (Security and Safety Committee, in free translation into Portuguese) already existed, but operated within the structure of OpenAI itself. Now, it operates in a parallel way and without direct relations with employees, although it has contact with representatives of the security teams and the board of directors.

Basically, the advice goes supervise processes involving the development of language models and their application in OpenAI services. He will receive frequent reports from the company and, in the process, may even delay or request revisions of releases if you encounter serious privacy or digital protection concerns.

In terms of operation, it is similar to what Meta adopted a few years ago with its own committee, which evaluates several controversial issues on digital platforms and whose demands are not always met by the brand.

The committee's first job as an independent body was to review the structure of the o1OpenAI's new language model.

Changes at OpenAI

The decision to change was made after a 90-day analysis by the committee itself of the company's transparency practices. Another measure taken was the departure of OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, who held a position on the board even though he was the executive manager — that is, he was supervising himself.

The new team will be led by Zico Kolterwho is the director of the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Other confirmed names are Adam D'AngeloCEO and co-founder of Quora, the retired general Paul Nakasone e Nicole Seligmanwho serves on Sony's board.

The change is another step in the company's likely shift to a for-profit structure, something that is expected to happen in 2025.

Expected to premiere in 2025, Fantastic Four: First Steps will mark the debut of the most famous family of superheroes in comics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although the film will not take long to make its debut, some of its details are still unknown to fans — such as how The Thing will be characterized.

While in the first Fox films the hero was characterized only with the use of prosthetics and practical effects, the 2015 feature film created a version of him entirely made in computer graphics. Marvel, on the other hand, seems to have decided to take a middle path. to ensure the best possible quality for your new production.

Will the Thing from the new Fantastic Four be made in CGI?

In an interview with VarietyEbon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) shared some details about how his version of Ben Grimm/The Thing will be characterized. He explained that he's been forced to shave his beard more frequently because he has to use a lot of motion capture equipment while filming The Fantastic Four.

“I’m doing a lot of motion capture. So in order to get the most facial capture data, I have to be clean-shaven,” he explained. “They have so many amazing animators working on it, literally hundreds of people dedicated to it. We’ve been shooting for about six weeks, I haven’t seen anything yet,” he continued.

While much of the First Steps Thing is supposed to be built in CGI, Marvel will also appeal to practical references to build the character. In August of this year, leaked photographs from the film set showed a person wearing generously sized prosthetics and a mask covering their face while playing the character.

The new Thing must be made in CGI from practical referencesThe new Thing must be made in CGI from practical referencesSource: Disclosure/Marvel

However, at the time it was not possible to confirm whether the person doing this was Moss-Bachrach herself or someone else who was assisting the production team. However, it was clear that she was using generously sized gloves to be able to imitate the size and strength of the being with skin completely transformed into stone.

In this way, Marvel should work with Fantastic Four: First Steps in a similar way to how it treated Josh Brolin's Thanos in the past. While the actor did use some accessories to emulate the villain's presence on screen, they ended up essentially serving as references for the animators' work.

Movie promises a classic look for its heroes

While the Thing's final look has yet to be clearly revealed by Marvel, the expectation is that the new film will bring a more convincing version of the character than the Fox projects. His most recent appearance was in the 2015 feature film, when Jamie Bell's movements and expressions were transformed using only CGI techniques.

Bringing Ben Grimm to the big screen is no easy task.Bringing Ben Grimm to the big screen is no easy task.Source: Disclosure/Marvel

The way the film handled the hero was quite different from the company's first two films, in which Michael Chiklis wore a real-life costume. While this meant that his version of Ben Grimm wasn't as strong or large as he was in the comics, the decision has proven to stand the test of time.

Betting on a retro look for its protagonists, Fantastic Four: First Steps should also use CGI to build its Galactus, who will be played by Ralph Ineson. Currently, the film is scheduled to premiere on July 25, 2025, but recent rumors indicate that it may be postponed to November 7 of the same year.

More changes to WhatsApp

In addition to this change, the update now allows you to administrators hide chats from certain Community membersleaving some conversations visible only to invitees.

This feature better organizes the structure of the space and allows for more discreet chats, such as for segmented teams or just for privileged users, for example.

The update was made official last Friday (13), but is gradually being released to all users globally. If you still do not have access to the features, just wait a few more weeks at most until they are fully available.

Communities are special pages that allow the creation of networks of people, with multiple groups belonging to the same space. In Brazil, the feature was released at the beginning of 2023.

In addition to adding new powers to Community owners, WhatsApp is also testing the use of an AI chatbot with celebrity voices, the separation of contact lists from multiple accounts and the possibility of joining conversations from other messengers into a single app — a measure currently exclusive to the European Union.
