Uber launches stricter identity verification for passengers

Uber has announced new measures to verify the identity of its passengers — but this time, to protect drivers. The authentication methods were presented this Tuesday (17) at a company event in the United States.

Just like drivers, passengers will have to go through a more rigorous verification process: the application will compare data such as name and phone number against third-party databases to check for possible inconsistencies.

A platform also added a new verification badge for passengers. To receive it, the user must present an official document in the application and confirm their identity.

Uber will now verify passengers' identities in exchange for a special badge.

When the account is verified, the ride request will appear with the special seal, providing more security to the driver. It is worth remembering, however, that identity verification is not mandatory for the passengerwhile the cross-referencing of information with a database, yes.

In testing since the beginning of the year

The new passenger authentication system has been in testing since the beginning of the year, but in a limited number of cities. According to the company, results were satisfactory “with most customers” of these markets.

With this new feature, Uber hopes to ensure a safer experience for drivers — its main user base.

In Brazil, passengers must provide a valid CPF number and date of birth to re-register. However, the system does not verify whether the document actually belongs to the person.

According to Uber's official page, the new verification system (data cross-referencing and identity authentication) will be released first in the United StatesThere is no forecast for the launch of the new product in more regions.

Richard Linklater: 5 great films from the director of The Accidental Killer that you need to watch

Richard Linklater: 5 great films from the director of The Accidental Killer that you need to watch

Active since the 1990s, the director Richard Linklater is one of the biggest favorites among moviegoers. Despite not being the most popular filmmaker in Hollywood (compared to other giants like Nolan or Tarantino, for example), it is difficult to find someone who has never seen at least one of Linklater's films and, more than that, didn't like it.

That's because Richard Linklater has already directed some very famous films, such as Dazed and Confused, School of Rock and Boyhood – the latter of which was even nominated for six categories at the 2015 Oscars.

Before SunriseBefore Sunrise is one of Richard Linklater's most famous films.

To remember the filmmaker's career, we decided to select four films (and a trilogy) by the director that you need to watch as soon as possible!

Before Sunrise Trilogy (1995-2004-2013)

If you haven't watched all three films in the 'Before' trilogy, put everything else aside and go check them out right now! Over the course of twenty years – the films were released 10 years apart – we follow a couple as they meet, reunite and, hopefully, have a happy (but very realistic) ending.

The trilogy is a favorite among the director's fans and all have more than 95% approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • Where to watch: Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are available on Max, while Before Midnight is only available to rent.

Boyhood (2014)

Boyhood is another Linklater film that took a long time to complete. In total, it took the director 12 years to film the entire film. The production follows the life of the boy Mason, from childhood to adolescence, showing the entire process of maturation, his relationship with his parents and his own discoveries.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

In another coming-of-age film by Linklater, we follow a group of young people in the 1970s trying to make the most of their last day of high school. The irresponsible youth overflows with a party atmosphere, lots of alcohol, drugs and fast cars.

  • Where to watch: Available for rent

Waking Life (2001)

This animation is for those who enjoy films and series that bring true reflections. “After failing to wake up from a dream, a young man begins to meet real-life people in his imaginary world, with whom he has long conversations about the various states of human consciousness and philosophical and religious discussions”, says the film's synopsis.

  • Where to watch: not available on Brazilian streaming services

Accidental Killer (2024)

Richard Linklater's latest film was released in May of this year and received critical acclaim. The plot follows Gary Johnson, an ordinary man recruited by the police to work undercover as a hitman – and arrest those who try to hire him. Everything changes when a woman asks for help to get rid of her abusive husband.

  • Where to watch: Prime Video

Got an R36s or Steam Deck? This Inexpensive Accessory from Lexar Is Perfect for You

Got an R36s or Steam Deck? This Inexpensive Accessory from Lexar Is Perfect for You

Owners of portable consoles for emulation, such as the R36s, often have to deal with memory cards to transfer files. MicroSDs are also part of the lives of those who have more robust devices, such as the Steam Deck, which accepts this type of storage accessory to store games.

Here, however, my routine with the devices involves a small headache: I am a user of a Desktop PC that does not have a connection for MicroSD cards.. While this is common on notebooks, those who play on desktop computers may have difficulty transferring files to their laptops.

Lexar

Fortunately, there is a simple and inexpensive solution in Brazil. The manufacturer Lexar has in its product catalog the Lexar RW310 2-in-1 Micro SD Card Readerwhich can save the lives of those who own portable consoles. Check out more details about the product below, which was tested here at Voxel with a memory card from the same manufacturer.

What is the Lexar RW310?

The Lexar RW310 is an accessory that has the shape and size of a conventional flash drive and allows you to transfer files from a memory card to a computer via USB. The model has a USB-A connection on one end and USB-C on the otherfollowing the protocol USB 3.2 Gen 1.

USB

The memory card can be inserted into the side of the product, either directly or through an adapter — if you use a camera, for example. The model also comes with protectors for you to fit on both USB ends, ensuring greater security when you are not using the product.

The plastic model's design is not very reinforced, so the tip is to be careful when transporting it. The packaging even has a cord, which makes it easier to attach the accessory to something when traveling, for example.

Testing the RW310 and Lexar memory card

To put the power of Lexar's MicroSD conversion into practice, we used a memory card provided by the company itself. The model Lexar Professional Silver Plus 256 GB has the following characteristics, according to the official website:

  • Reading speeds up to 205 MB/s

  • Writing speeds up to 150 MB/s

  • MicroSDXC UHS-I

  • Support for 4K UHD recording

  • Compatibility with Android and iOS phones, drones, cameras and portable consoles.

  • IPX7 resistance, wear resistance, temperature resistance, X-ray proof, vibration proof, magnetic proof, shock proof and drop proof.

  • Operating temperature: 25°C to 85°C (-13°F to 185°F)

  • Storage temperature: -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F)

  • Dimensions (Length X Width X Height)

  • 11 mm x 15 mm x 1 mm

The memory card can be easily connected to the RW310, either directly or via the adapter that comes with the product in the box. The RW310 can be easily connected to the top of the computer or directly to the motherboard — as well as to other devices such as cell phones and tablets, for example.

USB

When connected to the PC, the device is recognized as a USB device. File transfer, however, works normally and all files go directly to the MicroSD.

Here, we tested a 50 GB transfer to the model and had no problems. The product was able to handle more than 300 files and completed the transfer at an average speed of 134 MB/s, with completion in about five minutes.

It is worth it?

The Lexar RW310 2-in-1 memory card reader can be found in Brazil for purchase for around R$64 on Mercado Livre. Despite being a device with very specific functionality, the price is justified especially if you are having difficulty transferring files from a MicroSD card to a desktop.

The model is essential for those who have consoles such as the popular R36s and others focused on emulation. In addition, the adapter ensures more comfort when handling files on products such as the Steam Deck.

The device can also be useful for those who have cameras or even want to transfer files from a cell phone's MicroSD without using a USB cable. For those looking for extra comfort to deal with this type of situation, it is worth keeping the Lexar accessory on your radar.

Geothermal energy: how can volcanoes generate electrical energy?

Geothermal energy: how can volcanoes generate electrical energy?

The way society consumes energy is causing climate change on the planet. Therefore, scientists and companies are looking for alternatives to reduce the use of fossil fuels. One possibility is nuclear fusion, which could provide clean energy, but this is a plan that is still far from being realized. The Earth itself is capable of producing electricity through geothermal energy; but could this energy meet society's energy needs?

Geothermal energy is generated by processes that occur inside the Earth, where high temperatures are produced deep within the planet.. This happens mainly in regions with volcanoes, where the subsoil is heated intensely until the rocks turn into lava. In other words, it is through this natural system that electrical energy can be generated below our feet.

In fact, it is possible to take advantage of geothermal energy to generate electricity and power tools and machinery, but it is not as simple as it seems. The natural resource is widely available across the planet, but that is not the problem.

“Geothermal energy is a natural source of heat energy from within the Earth that can be captured and harnessed for cooking, bathing, heating, generating electricity, and other uses. The total amount of geothermal energy in the Earth far exceeds the world’s current energy needs, but it can be difficult to harness for electricity production,” Encyclopedia Britannica describes.

What is geothermal energy?

Geothermal energy is a resource constantly produced below the Earth's surface, where high temperatures are maintained by the processes of radioactive decay of potassium, thorium and uranium in the planet's crust and mantle, in addition to the friction generated by the movement of tectonic plates. This energy is expelled from the interior of the Earth through volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, among other natural phenomena.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, The Earth produces, on average, 50 to 70 milliwatts of energy per square meter annually. Just 10 km below the surface of North America, around six thousand times more energy is generated than all the world's oil reserves. In other words, this amount would be enough to supply the entire planet.

That's why, Geothermal energy has been the focus of study for researchers looking for new sources of renewable energy. Unlike solar and wind energy, geothermal energy can be accessed 24 hours a day, all year round. While solar energy depends on daylight, wind energy depends on the intensity of the winds in each region.

Some companies have already built geothermal plants in volcanic regions, such as Hawaii. Some companies have already built geothermal plants in volcanic regions, such as Hawaii.Source: Getty Images

“Some ‘dry steam’ geothermal plants simply collect rising steam from the ground and pipe it directly to a turbine. Other plants, built around flash steam and binary cycle designs, use a mixture of steam and heated water (‘wet steam’) extracted from the ground to start the electrical generation process,” the Britannica Encyclopedia adds.

How does geothermal energy work?

Currently, several places already use geothermal sources to supply part of their energy consumption. In Iceland, approximately 25% of energy from renewable sources comes from geothermal energy. However, there is a clear reason why this energy is not widely used to generate electricity in many cities around the world. The construction of geothermal plants is extremely expensive.

To build a plant of this type, it needs to be close to volcanoes or other areas with extreme temperatures, which is not a reality all over the world. For example, there are no active volcanoes in Brazil.

According to the website The Conversationin addition to being expensive and not widely available, drilling into the ground to build the plants can cause small earthquakes. In other words, there are several challenges that make it difficult to use this energy, but it will certainly be one of the focuses of scientists in the coming years.

Pager explosions in Lebanon kill 9; hacker attack suspected

Pager explosions in Lebanon kill 9; hacker attack suspected

Explosions occurred in Lebanon, this Tuesday (17), left at least nine people dead and around 2,800 injuredaccording to information from the local Health Ministry. The main suspicion is that pagers used by Hezbollah operatives were hacked and blown up in a coordinated attack, causing the incident, according to the Al Jazeera.

Quite popular in the 1980s and 1990s, Pagers are small communication devices that use radio signals to send and receive messages. Each device has a code that must be informed to the telephone exchange when transmitting the message.

pagerPager exploded

Despite having lost ground to cell phones, the device is still used. In the case of the armed group supported by Iran, its fighters began using the old device to replace smartphones as a way to avoid tracking by Israel, since they do not have a geolocation system.

According to Lebanese authorities, Hezbollah pagers were imported a few months ago and explosive charges of 10 g to 20 g were reportedly identified inside themin the middle of a fake electronic component. One of the injured reported that the device heated up moments before exploding.

Confusing story

After the pager explosions in Lebanon, one of the hypotheses being discussed is that the devices were the target of a cyber attack allegedly led by Israel to cause batteries to overheat and allow detonation. But according to the The Stackthe use of this method is unlikely, especially involving numerous devices.

For experts consulted by the publication, the possibility that the supply chain has been compromised is greater than the speculated cyberattack. In this case, the authors of the action would have accessed the pagers before sending them to users, even including explosives next to the battery of each one of them.

Accused of causing the incident, Israel has not responded to the accusations, so far. Lebanese government has urged all pager users in the country to discard their devices immediately.
