Held on the evening of last Sunday (15), the Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 confirmed the favoritism of Shogun: The Glorious Saga of Japan and The Bear, while bringing several surprises. Among them was the victory of Hacks in the category of Best Comedy Series, something that many did not bet could happen.
During the night, the HBO production also took home the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series (Jean Smart) and Best Writing for a Comedy Series, the latter shared by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky. But after all, What is so good about the production that it manages to beat all its competitors?
What is Hacks about, the series that surprised at the Emmys?
Released in 2021 by HBO, Hacks follows the story of Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a Las Vegas stand-up comedian who is feeling the passage of time. Willing to renew her jokes to keep her residency at the Palmetto Casino, she enlists the help of Ava Daniels (Hannah Eibinder), a controversial young comedian.
Despite having potential, she ends up being canceled by the internet after publishing a comment considered to be in bad taste, in addition to maintaining her reputation for being arrogant. In this context, the opportunity to help the comedian in decline ends up emerging as one of the last options she has to stay in the business.
Although it focuses on the funny clashes generated by the relationship between its protagonists, Hacks also shows them developing a friendship. While Deborah helps her new screenwriter deal with personal problems, Ava helps the veteran decide to take more risks in her career.
Currently in its third season, The HBO series has stood out for having critics and audiences agree since its debut. On Rotten Tomatoes, its debut season has a 99% approval rating among critics, a feat that is only made rarer by the fact that it is accompanied by 90% positive reviews from the site's audience.

Interestingly, this relationship was also maintained in the second season (100% of critics, 90% of the public) and in the third, which was approved by 98% of specialized media outlets and 91% of the audience.
