The series recently premiered on Max City of God: The Fight Doesn't Stopa revival of the Brazilian film released in 2002. To the delight of fans of the film, the production brings back several of the original characters, including Buscapé (Alexandre Rodrigues), Berenice (Roberta Rodrigues), Barbantinho (Edson Oliveira) and Bradock (Thiago Martins).
The series has Aly Muritiba (Cangaço Novo) as general director and Sérgio Machado (Cidade Baixa) leading the team of scriptwriters. Fernando Meirelles, director of the original, is one of the producers.

Carrying the legacy of one of the greatest Brazilian films in history, expectations and fears about City of God: The Fight Does Not Stop were high. After all, does the series have a chance of making it to the main TV awards, just like City of God made it to the Oscars in 2004?

Series Reviews
Starting with Rotten Tomatoes, one of the largest sites that aggregates ratings from both critics and the public, The series City of God was evaluated by only six people, who gave it an 83% approval rating. in total. Here, it is worth noting that many professionals leave a series to be evaluated only after its completion. Therefore, the production grade should change over the next few weeks.
On Metacritic, we have even fewer voters. Only four professionals have reviewed the series so far, resulting in a score of 53 out of 100.
So far, reviews have been mixed. The Guardian, for example, gave the film just two stars, saying that “the authenticity and drive of the original have been stripped away.” The Guardian said “there was a structural elegance to the film that was completely lost in the series.”
The Hollywood Reporter, which only watched the first two episodes, points out that the series is more stuck in the past instead of moving forward.
Decider, on the other hand, gave the production a 70, pointing out that the narrative may be a little confusing for those who haven't seen the original 2002 film, but “has the potential to be a tense thriller” for the rest of the season.
From current reviews, City of God: The Fight Does Not Stop has had a very mixed reception – which makes it difficult to predict whether we will have a place in television awards, such as the International Emmyfor example. But, as we mentioned above, the ratings and reviews are still likely to change with the release of the last episodes of the season.
It is worth remembering that the series was renewed for a second season by Max, but there is still no release date.
